Meet the NHL Pros GALA – fund raiser for Friends of the Arena

The Friends of the Arena (FOTA) have volunteered hundreds of hours to repair renovae and otherwise breathe life into the arena since 2015.  They have also spent a lot of time raising money to cover the cost of these jobs.  This summer you can see many of them working every Tuesday night from 6:00 – 10:00 p.m.  The 2017 summer project involves removing all of the stands on the east side, placing them on the rink floor, insulating the (cold) east wall, putting it all back together in a way that will improve the views for the spectators.  Wow!!!  And all without tax dollars.

One of FOTA’s major fund raisers is taking place tomorrow night (June 15) at the Cove and is billed as Meet the NHL PROS GALA.  NHLers Rick Smith, Chris Phillips, Doug Jarvis, Fred O’Donnell, Rob Murphy and others will be at this event and are looking forward to spending some time chatting with you about their careers.  WOW! There are lots of prizes as well as a silent auction and a 50/50 draw.  Great buffet served by the Cove. And of course there will be music!  The Spencer Evans Trio is in the house.  Please consider supporting FOTA and their ongoing work at the arena.  You can call the Cove at 273-3636 for tickets.

Le Boat marketing team will be in Village on Sunday afternoon and evening

The excitement of having Le Boat on the Rideau in 2018 is building.  Their corporate marketing crew, including videographer and photographer are on the Rideau this week.  They were in Merrickville yesterday and will arrive in Westport tomorrow afternoon to get some video and still shots for their marketing video.  The weather forecast is for rain, but Ann Weir, Director of Economic Development for the United Counties of Leeds and Grenville assures me that she has 4 large umbrellas!  The rain doesn’t phase these French and English people!

For the retail business owners, there may be an opportunity between 4:00 and 5:00 tomorrow (Sunday) to video inside some of the stores.  Hopefully you will be pleased with this, however if you would prefer not to be included, just let Ann or me know.  No worries.

Call if you have any questions.  9195.

Push your chests out a little farther with Canadian Pride – US News ranks Canada #1 for Quality of Life, #2 for Best Country in the World and the New York times ranks Canada the #1 place to go in 2017 … Seriously!!!

Canada is ranked #1

Canada has been named the #2 best country in the world for the second straight year.

Well, we’ve also been named as the #1 country in the world in 2017 for Quality of Life:

Canada #1 Quality of Life

usnews.com

The study, conducted by U.S. News in partnership with Y&R’s BAVand Wharton, broke 80 countries’ overall rankings down by identifying a “set of 65 country attributes – terms that can be used to describe a country and that are also relevant to the success of a modern nation.”

Each of those 65 attributes was then placed into one of nine subcategories that included:

  • Adventure (3.24 percent): friendly, fun, pleasant climate, scenic, sexy
  • Citizenship (16.95 percent): cares about human rights, cares about the environment, gender equality, progressive, religious freedom, respects property rights, trustworthy, well-distributed political power
  • Cultural Influence (12.93 percent): culturally significant in terms of entertainment, fashionable, happy, has an influential culture, modern, prestigious, trendy
  • Entrepreneurship (17.42 percent): connected to the rest of the world, educated population, entrepreneurial, innovative, provides easy access to capital, skilled labor force, technological expertise, transparent business
practices, well-developed infrastructure, well-developed legal framework
  • Heritage (3.17 percent): culturally accessible, has a rich history, has great food, many cultural attractions
  • Movers (10.00 percent): different, distinctive, dynamic, unique
  • Open for Business (11.99 percent): bureaucratic, cheap manufacturing costs, corrupt, favorable tax environment, transparent government practices
  • Power (7.42 percent): a leader, economically influential, politically influential, strong international alliances, strong military
  • Quality of Life (16.89 percent): a good job market, affordable, economically stable, family friendly, income equality, politically stable, safe, well-developed public education system, well-developed public health system

When the inaugural list of the world’s best countries was released last year at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Canada was also named the #1 country in the world for Quality of Life, the study’s third most heavily weighted category.

In 2017, Canada beat out Sweden, Denmark, Australia, and Norway who all finished in the Quality of Life top 5.

Oh Canada … Happy Birthday!!!!

Committed to community. Dedicated to progress.
