GIFT OF LIGHT – DECEMBER 12 – JANUARY 2

Thank you block captains. You have been very successful encouraging your neighbours to add a light, or two, or many to their outside Christmas decorating this year. The block captains are: Joyce Acton, Joan Barrett, Mary Anne Bishop, Kim Bonner, Jacky Brady, Barry Card, Judy Fielding, Robin Jones, Ami Merkley and family, Rob Roberts, Paul Thorp and Tara and John (Dancing Moon). Please give them a “tip of the hat” when you see them. I also want to give a shout out to the decorating teams at Olivet Baptist Church, Westport Free Methodist Church, St Edward’s Catholic Church, Knox Presbyterian Church and St Paul’s Anglican Church.

With the recent increase of the virus in the village and area and many people self isolating, more than ever we need to support each other. The GIFT of LIGHT creates a rainbow of colour on every street – and we know that the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow is our own Westport.

CHRISTMAS GIFT OF LIGHT

The number of positive cases of COVID-19 in Ontario continues to rise and it looks like Christmas will be spent close to home. We can do something in Westport that will make a big difference in the lives of our residents, business owners and visitors.   From Dec 12 – Jan 2, let’s encourage everyone to light up the streets by adding Christmas lights to their homes and businesses.  We can give the Gift of Light this Christmas to our neighbours.

In early November, the Village put out a call for “street captains” to encourage their neighbours, who didn’t put up lights last year, to add something bright this year.  The captains now have all of the streets covered with the exception of Concession St. If you want to decorate and would appreciate some support, your Captain may soon be knocking on your door. You can reach out to me and I will let you know who your street captain is.

Councillor Jacky Brady and her Tourism Team are encouraging the businesses downtown to decorate their windows with lights as well.

There is a supply of lights, spots and other decorations at Town Hall. We have received some private donations to cover these costs and last Friday, President Jim Scala presented a $250 cheque from the Westport Lions Club towards the Gift of Light. Les, Bev and the gang at Home Hardware were very generous and helped stretch our dollars. Thank you everyone for your support.

Christmas gift of light – call for street captains

The number of positive cases of COVID-19 in Ontario continues to rise and it looks like Christmas will be very low key.

We can do something in Westport that will make a difference in the lives of our residents, business owners and visitors. We can give the Gift of Light this Christmas to our neighbours.

From Dec 12 – Jan 2, let’s encourage everyone to light up the streets by adding a light or two or three to their homes and businesses.  It doesn’t have to be a string of lights, it can be a spot light shining on the front door or tree, inside lights on the windows, a coloured light on the front porch.  Think of how the Village will look, how it will feel.

The Village is going to engage “street captains” again, as we did for the July 1st celebrations.  These volunteers will encourage 3 of their neighbours who did not put up lights last year, to add something bright this year.  If only 3 more houses on every street give the gift of light, it will make a big difference. If you are interested in being involved as a “street captain”, pls send me an email rjones@villageofwestport.ca. and indicate your street. We will have a virtual meeting in the next couple of weeks to plan our strategy.

Light symbolizes many things – but regardless of religion or culture, it means hope.  By giving the gift of light this year, you show you care and that you offer hope with others.
