Canada is ranked #1

Canada has been named the #2 best country in the world for the second straight year.

Well, we’ve also been named as the #1 country in the world in 2017 for Quality of Life:

Canada #1 Quality of Life

The study, conducted by U.S. News in partnership with Y&R’s BAVand Wharton, broke 80 countries’ overall rankings down by identifying a “set of 65 country attributes – terms that can be used to describe a country and that are also relevant to the success of a modern nation.”

Each of those 65 attributes was then placed into one of nine subcategories that included:

  • Adventure (3.24 percent): friendly, fun, pleasant climate, scenic, sexy
  • Citizenship (16.95 percent): cares about human rights, cares about the environment, gender equality, progressive, religious freedom, respects property rights, trustworthy, well-distributed political power
  • Cultural Influence (12.93 percent): culturally significant in terms of entertainment, fashionable, happy, has an influential culture, modern, prestigious, trendy
  • Entrepreneurship (17.42 percent): connected to the rest of the world, educated population, entrepreneurial, innovative, provides easy access to capital, skilled labor force, technological expertise, transparent business
practices, well-developed infrastructure, well-developed legal framework
  • Heritage (3.17 percent): culturally accessible, has a rich history, has great food, many cultural attractions
  • Movers (10.00 percent): different, distinctive, dynamic, unique
  • Open for Business (11.99 percent): bureaucratic, cheap manufacturing costs, corrupt, favorable tax environment, transparent government practices
  • Power (7.42 percent): a leader, economically influential, politically influential, strong international alliances, strong military
  • Quality of Life (16.89 percent): a good job market, affordable, economically stable, family friendly, income equality, politically stable, safe, well-developed public education system, well-developed public health system

When the inaugural list of the world’s best countries was released last year at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Canada was also named the #1 country in the world for Quality of Life, the study’s third most heavily weighted category.

In 2017, Canada beat out Sweden, Denmark, Australia, and Norway who all finished in the Quality of Life top 5.

Oh Canada … Happy Birthday!!!!

Come on down to the Harbour!

Kevin Kardash, our Harbour Master, has the place looking fabulous.  He said today as he showed me the results of his spring cleaning, “it is amazing what a fresh coat of paint can do!”  The picnic tables and benches are all set out waiting for you and your friends & family to sit a bit and enjoy the view.

And Kevin’s efforts are not the only ones working to make the spring and harbour look better than ever.  Westport in Bloom volunteers, Delvalle, Deb Bird, Rob and Marianne Roberts and Jackalyn Brady did a makeover today.  Look at the stunning gardens they put in!  Beautiful.

Kevin has three people working with him in the harbour this summer.  Watch my blog for your introductions to them next week!

Thank you to everyone who works to make our Village the best place to live, work and visit.

Victoria Day Sesquicentennial Tea was a “proper” event!

This week, Queen Victoria dropped in on the Mayor’s Task Force’s Victoria Day Tea!  The tea was organized by Mary Anne Bishop and her team and supported by the women’s church guilds.  It was held at the Lions Club Beach House, with its breathtaking views.  Over 70 women and 1 British gentleman (hats off to you Dr. Rob!) attended, many dressed in clothing consistent with Queen Victoria’s reign.

Thank you to all of the volunteers who made this a wonderful event and to the ladies who came for tea!

Mary Anne Bishop, Jackalyn Brady and Robin Jones – we all want to recognize Dorothy Maynard’s amazing skills as she made all our dresses.  Thank you Dorothy!

Line painting should be completed tonight, Thursday, May 18

Thank you to everyone who spread the last minute requests yesterday asking people to remove all vehicles from the Village streets where parking spaces are painted on the road.  The crew will be back tonight – hopefully the rain will hold off – to complete the job.  Once again, if you see someone parking on the one of the affected streets or municipal parking lots, could you please inform them that the painters will be in the Village tonight.

Thank you
