Canada Day 2016

Happy 149th Birthday Canada! There are so many wonderful events happening to celebrate Canada Day tomorrow.  For me the highlights are, among others, the 3:00 p.m. parade, my favourite band playing at the Cove and of course, the spectacular fireworks at dusk.  Weather will be h – h – h – hot, hazy and humid, so please dress accordingly.

Planning for the Sesquicentennial 150th Birthday for Canada is well under way in the Village for 2017.  It will be a bash!

July 1st is also a change for by-law enforcement in the Village.  During the month of June, our by-law enforcement officer spent time talking to people and educating them about different by-laws.  We also moved forward during June with the Township of Rideau Lakes to contract with the Rideau Lakes Fire Department for Open Air Burning enforcement.

Jenna Barr will be monitoring by-law infractions and Chief Jay Debernardi will be enforcing the Open Air Burning by-law.   For concerns about open air burning, you can contact the Chief at (613) 498-1261 Ext 2504. Here is the link to our by-law on Open Air Burning.     http://villageofwestport.ca/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/by-law-09-01-to-prescribe-the-conditions-under-which-fires-may-be-set-in-open-air1.pdf

Jenna can be contacted through Town Hall at 273-2191 (weekdays) or through her cell phone 613 483 2260.  If she is off duty, messages can be left for her at Town Hall or on her cell phone.  Jenna is not a police officer and for police, fire or medical  emergencies, call 9-1-1.  Other police related matters should go through the regular OPP number – 1-888-310-1122.
Have a great summer everyone.  See you in the ‘Port!!

Dentist to arrive in Westport by mid-July

As you are aware, we have been looking to recruit a dentist to the Village for the past year.  I just had a pleasant chat with the doctor who is setting up his practice at 41 Main St.

Dr Zulfar Moledina, a dental surgeon, with a large practice in Kanata can’t wait to work in our beautiful community. He hopes to open the doors by mid-July.  Dr Moledina was happy for me to share his bio with you (below).
This is great news!!!!!

Dr. Zulfar Moledina DDS

In 1989, I graduated from the University of Western Ontario with a Doctor of Dental Surgery degree (D.D.S).

For over 27 years, I have been in practice in the Ottawa/Kanata area.  I am a long standing member of the following associations:  Ottawa Dental Society, Ontario Dental Association and the Canadian Dental Association.

I enjoy all aspects of Dentistry: however Orthodontics, Implants and Cosmetic Dentistry allow me to be creative and the results are very rewarding.

Outside of the office I enjoy traveling, golf, fitness programs, hiking and cycling.

Mayor’s Sesquicentennial Task Force

Canada’s 150th Birthday is coming up fast.  At the March Council Meeting, the Village of Westport established the Mayor’s Sesquicentennial Task Force.  The purpose of this committee is to encourage and coordinate activities throughout 2017 in celebration of our 150th Birthday as a Nation.
I will be hosting a plenary meeting at the Lions Beach House on Tuesday, May 24 from 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. for volunteer organizations, businesses, churches and committees of Council – and anyone who wants to help out.  Please bring your ideas of what we can do as a whole village or as individuals/groups next year.  We will determine next steps based upon our discussions on the 24th.
Many of us remember 1967 – our Centennial Year … when we sang ….:
We love thee
Proud and free
North south east west
There’ll be happy times,
Church Bells will ring, ring, ring
It’s the hundredth anniversary of
Ev’rybody sing together!
We love thee
Proud and free
Now that you have that tune playing in your head, let’s think about what we can do in the Village to celebrate the Sesquicentennial in a BIG, CANADIAN WAY!
Mary Anne Bishop has volunteered to help with this task force.  Many thanks!
Please let Mary Anne thepamperedladybug@gmail.com or me know if you are able to attend the meeting.
