Update on water pipe leak on Concession St.

The repair has been completed and we DID NOT lose pressure in the water system. So no boiling water order is being issued. There is still more work to finish the repair, but that will occur tomorrow. Right now the water tower is filling up and things are back to normal. Don’t be concerned when you see the crews out there tomorrow. Many thanks to Chief Jay and the Westport fire fighters … and to the many who emailed me ready to volunteer for the canvass on such a lousy night.

Call if you need anything. 9195

Broken water pipe on Concession St

As you may be aware, there have been people working on a broken pipe on Concession most of the day. The water had to be shut off with the valve closest to the water plant, which means we have been using the water in the tower.  The work has been proceeding slowly on Concession, however we are hopeful that it will be done within the next few hours.

If the repair is not done before the water tower empties (and the Engineer has calculated that we still have 5 or 6 hours) – two things will happen.  The first is that there will be no water until the repair is completed and pressure is restored to the system .  When the system totally shuts down, a 48 hour boil water advisory is put in place. The crew is working hard to get the pipe fixed before we get to that point.

Should we get to the boil water stage, firefighters and volunteers will be knocking on doors to canvass each household after 8:00 p.m. tonight.

I will keep you updated as the evening proceeds.  Please call if you have concerns.

Need a little good news today about the 2016 and 2017 Village budgets?

At last night’s Village of Westport Council mtg, there were discussions regarding both the 2016 and 2017 Village budgets.

The final numbers are in for the 2016 Village budget.  On a budget of approx $1.6million,  we came in with a deficit of $1,000.  Absolutely amazing work by Council, staff and the contractors.  Particular kudos to our Treasurer, Anne Marie Koiner, who worked with Council and put additional checks and balances in place mid-year.  Congratulations Team!!!!!!!  and thank you for your dedication in coming in on budget.

Council also spent considerable time on round #4 of developing the 2017 budget.  We are committed to bringing in a budget that has no frills, no unnecessary purchases and yet covers those expenses that are either in the interest of public safety, required to protect damage to infrastructure or required by law.  Round #5 will occur at the Committee of the Whole meeting on Tuesday, February 21 @ 7:00 p.m. Please join us and hear the discussions first hand.

Some clarification regarding ongoing Village Budget discussions

The process this Council has adopted for developing the budget is to have several run throughs – line by line – of both the general and the capital budget.  The budget meetings are open to the public and in between meetings, there is lots of opportunity for council to consult with members of the community.  This past Monday night was our 3rd meeting to develop the 2017 budget and our 4th will be held on Monday, February 6 at 7:00 p.m.  All are welcome.  The meeting on Wednesday, February 1 @ 2:00 p.m. (referred to in Jan 26 Review Mirror) is to discuss and approve the contingency plan for managing the effluent in the lagoons this winter/spring. It is also open to the public, however it is not a budget meeting.

There are some areas in the general budget that will be reconsidered by Council on Feb 6 when another line by line review occurs.  The increases in staffing and marketing requested by the Harbour Committee will be part of the review. The draft capital budget was $60,000 by the end of round 3.  Funds required for road repairs are being researched and will be discussed on Feb 6.  Otherwise, we are likely getting closer to the capital budget for 2017.

I invite everyone to contact me or the Councillor of your choice if you have any questions about the budget.  The Village has many challenges that need to be addressed – new roof for the library, roads that are in dire need of attention, and of course the impact the warm weather has on the ability of the Snowfluent system to treat waste water.  At the same time, we are cognizant of the impacts of other rate increases and the cap & trade on monthly household budgets.  We are doing are best to take all of these factors into consideration.

Beautiful Morning for a Walk in the’Port

The Village is a busy place this morning.  In addition to the birds and critters, Desi and I met up with lots of people on our walk.  It is the quintessential winter morning – fresh snow, sunshine & blue sky and just below 0 degrees.  I want to send a big shout out to Craig, Jamie and the rest of the crew – roads and sidewalks are in great shape.  Thank you from all of us who head out every morning for fresh air and exercise.
