Mayor’s Sesquicentennial Task Force

Canada’s 150th Birthday is coming up fast.  At the March Council Meeting, the Village of Westport established the Mayor’s Sesquicentennial Task Force.  The purpose of this committee is to encourage and coordinate activities throughout 2017 in celebration of our 150th Birthday as a Nation.
I will be hosting a plenary meeting at the Lions Beach House on Tuesday, May 24 from 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. for volunteer organizations, businesses, churches and committees of Council – and anyone who wants to help out.  Please bring your ideas of what we can do as a whole village or as individuals/groups next year.  We will determine next steps based upon our discussions on the 24th.
Many of us remember 1967 – our Centennial Year … when we sang ….:
CA-NA-DA
We love thee
CA-NA-DA
Proud and free
(Chorus):
North south east west
There’ll be happy times,
Church Bells will ring, ring, ring
It’s the hundredth anniversary of
Confederation
Ev’rybody sing together!
CA-NA-DA
We love thee
CA-NA-DA
Proud and free
Now that you have that tune playing in your head, let’s think about what we can do in the Village to celebrate the Sesquicentennial in a BIG, CANADIAN WAY!

Mary Anne Bishop has volunteered to help with this task force.  Many thanks!

Please let Mary Anne thepamperedladybug@gmail.com or me know if you are able to attend the meeting.

PULL TOGETHER ON MAY 14

Pull Together In Westport – Saturday May 14, 2016

Pull together on May 14 and help by picking up roadside and park litter in an effort to continue to make Westport a beautiful place to live, work and play.

Organize a group or come alone, enjoy the barbecue after the work is done and make this a day where the community pulls together.

Register at Town Hall at 9:30. Coffee will be hot to get you started. Barbecue afterwards at the Harbour will finish the day.

Bags provided. Please bring gloves and wear safety vest or bright top.

PULL TOGETHER IN WESTPORT – JUST FOR THE PRIDE OF IT.

RANDOM ACTS OF KINDNESS

I want to send a huge shout out to the Rideau Vista Public School teachers, staff and students!

Students – Thank you for your “clean up the Village”day on Thursday from everyone in Westport. You did a hard day’s work – as we all can see from the clean sidewalks and grass boulevards.  You also brought smiles to many of our faces.

For the teachers and staff – our hats are off to you.  These “life lessons” you teach your students through role modelling result in our children growing into responsible civic leaders and members.  You are all amazing.  Thank you!!!

Hauling from the lagoons ends this week

You will stop seeing the trucks on the highways and parking lots this week.  The contract was to haul 30,000 cubic metres of effluent from our lagoons to another municipality’s processing plant and I expect the last truck to make its run today.  The hauling has lowered the large lagoon from a height of 178 cm of effluent to 150 cm.  I had hoped to get it lower – but lots of rain, inflow and infiltration this spring has worked against us.

We will monitor the situation closely over the next few weeks and are hopeful that we will not need to haul anymore this spring.  The only bright side is due to so little processing taking place at the plant this winter, there was very little snow to melt.  This optimistically means that the spring summer application can begin earlier than other years.  We are waiting for the site to dry out at which time staff can lay out the summer pipes and generator and begin.  We are hoping for a mid-May start date.

Will keep you posted on when that occurs.  If you have any questions, please contact the Councillor of your choice or me at 613-273-9195.

Town Clean Up Day – Mark your calendar

Saturday, May 14 will be the 2nd Annual Volunteer Town Clean up Day in the ‘Port.  Last year we had 35 people show up to rake, pick up and bag leaves and garbage for a few hours.  Our Village was sparkling after their efforts.

Let’s put our best foot forward again this year!  Please join us at Town Hall at 09:00 on May 14.  Wear a brightly coloured top/t-shirt and bring your rake and gloves.  Town Hall will supply the  coffee and muffins, the post clean-up BBQ at the Spring and the garbage bags.  Come with a group of friends and you will be given an assignment where you can all work together or come alone and join some of your neighbours.

Join the clean up crew and enjoy a morning of getting the Village ready for the summer!
