On February 3, 2015, the Council of Westport held a Budget Town Hall meeting to hear your concerns. The following concerns were introduced by members of the public:
By-law enforcement
Litter barrel pickup during the summer season
Garbage bags instead of garbage tags
Speeding on Main St and Rideau St
Recycling, including costs and eligible items for recycling
Plans for the paving of Bedford Street
Now, 18 months later, I can report that Council has acted on your concerns.
We have hired a by-law enforcement officer
Routine litter barrel pickup has been increased during the summer months
We have gone to garbage tags for large garbage bags. There is still a large inventory of small garbage bags
A new 4-way stop was put in place at the corner of Bedford and Main St
The recycling program for the Village of Westport is driven by the Township of Rideau Lakes, as we use its services. We will continue to encourage the Township to widen the eligible items for recycling
We have been unsuccessful in our grant applications to pave Bedford St. The cost is approx $1.5 million and we will continue to keep this issue on our radar and apply for grants as they become available
Please continue to keep Council informed on your concerns and suggestions. This is our Village, your Village.
It may feel closer to July 1 than February 1 today. Received this wonderful YOUTUBE video by the Chris Hadfield & family that just might make you stand a little taller as a proud Canadian.
>> This makes you proud to be Canadian >> >> Chris Hadfield, you’ve done it again….. >> The retired astronaut created a music video about our country that’s sweeter than a double-double from Timmie’s. >> Titled “In Canada,” the song was a collaborative effort between Hadfield and his brother Dave in a mission to create “the most >> Canadian music video ever.” And you know what? They succeeded. >> >> Hadfield uploaded the “polite song” to YouTube, saying it came from “two brothers who are just hoping your day is going okay.” >> And thanks to this song, it’ll be a lot better than just “okay.” The rapid montage of Canadian culture reminds us of everything we love >> about this great country. Because at the end of the day, we’re just a bunch of exceedingly polite, Timbit-eating winter-lovers. >> And we wouldn’t have it any other way. Check out the video. >> >> HADFIELD GIFT TOCANADA < http://www.youtube-nocookie.com/embed/zuVsHt3rBnc?rel=0> >>
St. Edward Church Choir and St. Columbanus Church (Elgin) have just released a new Christmas CD, O Come Let Us Adore Him. I am enjoying listening to the beautiful voices and wonderful harmonies sung to many treasured Christmas songs and some I haven’t heard in years. Well done to all involved and a shout out to Fr. Louis Di Rocco for his inspiration and love of music.
Westport’s regularly scheduled Council meeting is Monday, July13 at 7:00 p.m. Our MP, Mr Gord Brown, will be attending the meeting. Come a little early if you want to have a chat with Gord.
