Monday, July 1st begins early with breakfast being served from 8:00 – 10:30 on Spring St by the Information Centre.  $5 meal deal and proceeds go to supporting community events.  Next we move to Lockwood Park, where we kick off the official part of the celebration.  The Colour Party of Branch 542 – Royal Canadian Legion will join us at the Cenotaph for the National Anthem and the raising of the Canadian flag.   Before we form up for the Canada Day parade, the winning name from the “Name the Red Dog” contest will be named.  Can you guess what it is???

Everyone is invited to join in the parade – grands, moms, dads, kids of all ages, dogs – well you get it!  Let’s walk together with Canadian Pride!

The parade route this year is down George St to Bedford, right on Bedford to Church St, right on Spring St to the community centre/fire hall.  The members of the Legion and the Westport fire fighters will meet the boys and girls after the parade.

The afternoon at the Lion’s Club Beach will be fun for the whole family with lots planned.  And then this great national holiday ends at Rideau Vista Public School for fireworks.

Thank you to every volunteer who has been part of planning our July 1st celebration.  It is exciting to see what can be done when we work together.

One of Canada’s most memorable advertising campaigns, the Molson Beer TV  I Am Canadian Rant by an “average Joe” spawned an outward expression of Canadian pride. The commercial poked fun at inaccurate Canadian stereotypes while assertively representing the Canadian pride that many Canadians humbly carry.

So here, on this Canada Day week-end of 2019, let’s be reminded about our ability to poke fun at ourselves while at the same time knowing we live in the greatest country on earth.

Happy Canada Day everyone!

THE I AM CANADIAN RANT

Hey, I’m not a lumberjack, or a fur trader….
I don’t live in an igloo or eat blubber, or own a dogsled….
and I don’t know Jimmy, Sally or Suzy from Canada,
although I’m certain they’re really really nice.

I have a Prime Minister, not a president.
I speak English and French, not American.
And I pronounce it ‘about’, not ‘a boot’.

I can proudly sew my country’s flag on my backpack.
I believe in peace keeping, not policing,
diversity, not assimilation,
and that the beaver is a truly proud and noble animal.
A toque is a hat, a chesterfield is a couch,
and it is pronounced ‘zed’ not ‘zee’, ‘zed’ !!!!

Canada is the second largest landmass!
The first nation of hockey!
and the best part of North America

My name is Joe!!
And I am Canadian!!!

NAME THAT RED DOG! contest

A recent addition to Lockwood Memorial Park in the Village of Westport is a 5 1/2 foot tall “red dog”, donated by a community member.  He is a handsome, fibreglass Great Dane. (I think!).

We are asking for your suggestions on what to call him.  Over the next three weeks, residents, business owners and visitors are encouraged to offer their wisdom on what this fellow should be called.  I have sent a letter and colouring sheets to the schools, encouraging their participation.

On October 19, the NAME THAT RED DOG! contest will close and he will have his forever name.  He hibernates for the winter and will be leaving the park around that time.  It is important to know what to call him before he leaves!

You can email me at rjones@villageofwesport.ca, leave a voice message at 9195 or catch me on the street.  If you are in Town Hall, the staff will also take your suggestions.  Have some fun!

Oh, and by the way – the winner, well – will get a bucket of pride for giving him a name!

Thank you
