“Take me out to the ball game….”

Volunteers from the Westport Men’s Fastball team and Westport Minor ball have spent many hours last fall and again the past few weeks giving the ball diamond in Lockwood Park much needed maintenance.  Stone dust has been spread in the infield, topsoil and grass seed spread in the low spots in the outfield.  Next on the list is to replace a few lights.   Thanks to all of the local companies who donated equipment and supplies and to all of the volunteers for rolling up their sleeves.  The baseball diamond looks great.

I want to remind everyone that the baseball diamond may be used as an off-lead dog park from November 1 – April 30.  The by-law prohibits dogs being off-lead from May 1 – October 31.  Thank you for your cooperation.

VILLAGE SPRING CLEAN UP DAY SATURDAY, MAY 12 @ 9:30 Town Hall

If you have a few hours on Saturday, May 12 please help us get the Village cleaned up for the long week-end!  Since 2015, volunteers have spent a couple of hours sweeping and raking in the Village.  The morning starts at 9:30 with coffee and baked goods at Town Hall when you register.   We finish with pizza at the Spring at noon.  Please bring a rake, work gloves and wear a bright coloured shirt.  We will supply the rest.

Update on Village new waste water system

The contract between the Village and the builder of the new waste water system requires the contractor to pay for the cost of hauling effluent this winter and spring.  The new system was to have been fully operational by November 21, 2017.  By that date, the Village had lowered the lagoon levels significantly.  Because the system was not operational on time, it became necessary to haul effluent to another municipality for several days in late January.  The cost of hauling was covered by the contractor.

The spring thaw and last weekend’s heavy rains resulted in excessive flows to the lagoons, decreasing the available capacity in the sewage lagoons. Hauling began on Thursday.  Again the cost of hauling is covered by the liquidated damages section of our contact and is being paid by the contractor.

We are confident that if the new system had been operational on November 21, no hauling would have been required this year.  We are also confident that moving forward, the new system is more than adequate to handle our sewage.

I will advise when the hauling is terminated.

Please call if you have any questions.  9195

Human Trafficking in Leeds&Grenville – yes, right here.

This afternoon I hosted a discussion about human sex trafficking in Leeds & Grenville.  Approximately 100 people met to learn about this criminal activity from the OPP, Leeds and Grenville Victim Services and MPP Laurie Scott.  The information is disturbing, the reality that it is going on in our part of Ontario is shocking – but this group of people – representing the public, NGOs, volunteer community groups, churches, social services, Upper Canada School Board, Brockville General hospital, the OPP, Brockville Police and the Mayors of North Grenville, Front of Young, Leeds and Thousand Islands, Township of Rideau Lakes and Merrickville-Wolford – offered their suggestions in three key areas : public education, prevention and intervention.  Stay tuned – there is much more work to do.

We all committed to doing one thing in regards to public education – to tell 10 people.  Hopefully this gets to more than 10 people, who will tell 10….

Many thanks to workshop presenters:

Sonya Jodoin, Victim Services Leeds & Grenville; MPP Steve Clark (Leeds & Grenville); MPP Laurie Scott (Haliburton, Kawartha Lakes, Brock); OPP Staff Sergeant Coyer Yateman
