What you missed if you weren’t at Committee of the Whole on Tuesday…
A few highlights of the meeting include:
Committee of the Whole supported the recommendation from Staff to put a heavy truck restriction on Bedford St from Concession to Main St in an effort to reduce the load on the street. Council will make its final decision at Council on August 6.
Due to many complaints this past year of motor vehicles, including 4 wheelers driving through Lockwood Park, Committee of the Whole has supported a new by-law prohibiting any motor vehicles in the park with the exception of service vehicles.
Committee of the Whole directed Staff to publish Requests for Proposal for winter maintenance (snow removal) 2019-22.
End of summer pot luck is being planned by Town Hall for Sunday, September 1 on Church St from Bedford to Spring. It will begin at 5:30 p.m. and everyone is invited – locals, visitors, cottagers. We want to wrap up summer as a community.
Staff will be providing information about the changes to the Waste and Recycling program, which go into effect on September 1. Hydro meter reading will soon be done electronically for all smart meters.
Council next meets on Tuesday, August 6 @ 6:00 p.m.
IT’S “QUILT DAY” IN WESTPORT
Hat’s off to the Westport Arts Council for organizing the “Fabric of our Lives”, a tribute and celebration of all things “quilted”. There are six locations for you to be inspired by hundreds of quilts! Stop at the museum first to register, beginning at 9:30. Show runs until 3:00 p.m. today.
The Arts Council has asked everyone to get involved … so please remember to put your quilts out today – on your front porch, in the garden, in your front window!
St Paul’s summer service & pot luck in Lockwood park
St Paul’s Anglican Church held its Sunday service in the park today (July 7). The parishioners loved being outdoors and improvised skit in lieu of the formal sermon under the direction of Dr Ward, their priest. A pot luck followed the service and then onto the entertainment including another skit and “name that tune” game.
If you are interested in having your family, church or community organization picnic or gathering in the park, please contact Patti Mueller – pmueller@villageofwestport.ca to book the stage area.
Review of Canada Day 2019
What a day! Breakfast, bicycle parade, fun at the beach and music & fireworks in the evening. And lots to eat and fun at each event!
We also announced the name chosen from the community wide submissions to name the “big red dog”, donated to Lockwood Memorial Park. Dr. A.L. (Ambrose Lorne) Lockwood was born March 30th, 1888 in Westport, Ontario. He attended Westport Public School, Athens High School and went on to McGill University for medical training. In 1914 he enlisted on the front lines of the surgical medical unit and was a pioneer in thoracic surgery. He received the Distinguished Service Order and Military Cross for his service in WW1. He has been recognized for his international reputation for contributions to surgical technique and published literature.
In 1987, Dr. A.L. Lockwood’s nephew Hiram “Buster” Lockwood, Director of Lockwood Foundation, approached the village to revitalize the park in 1987. The baseball diamond was created at the time and funded by the Foundation. This is the same foundation that gave a $100,000 grant to the Village in 2015 to add many of the new features including the basketball court and walking path. When several of the submissions to name the “red dog” were “Buster”, the panel felt this was another way of recognizing the commitment that the Lockwood family has made to the Village of Westport. So, say hello to “Buster” when you pass him in the park.
Thank you to all of the groups of volunteers who worked together to provide a Canada Day where everyone could show their pride. Enjoy the summer!
