Thank you for all of your hard work, year after year, in the beautification of our Village. The hanging plants look great. The heart felt thank yous go to those volunteers who have spent countless hours in the dirt building up our gardens. They are all stunning and the Library and Information Centre have never looked this professional. Well done, well done.
Mary Cowan has been holding the WOMAN OF THE YEAR recognition for over 20 years. Each spring she receives nominations of women who work for the betterment of the Village of Westport through their church, community groups and businesses.
On May 26, at the Cove Country Inn, Mary announced that the WOMAN OF THE YEAR for 2019 is Marianne Roberts. The name of the award winner is the best kept secret in Westport, and Marianne arrived at the Cove with her husband, daughter and son-in-law expecting to congratulate another woman! Many of Marianne’s friends joined her to celebrate. Marianne’s husband, Rob, gave a lovely speech that outlined many of the endeavours Marianne has supported.
Congratulations Marianne! Well deserved and many thanks for all you do for the Village of Westport.
On May 21, Committee of the Whole discussed several items and made recommendations for Council’s approval.
1.The Village’s contract for waste and recycling expires in September 2019 and an RFP had been issued to receive pricing proposals for a 3-year contract. Four proposals were received and all met the requirements of the RFP. The lowest bid was Limerick Environmental at $45,900, which has other contracts in Leeds & Grenville. Our 2019 budget for waste and recycling is $120,000.
2. The spray irrigation equipment, used when Snowfluent was our waste water treatment system, was approved to be sold for $12,000.
3. As a result of the Rideau Vista School Eco Club making a delegation to Council on April 16 with concerns about village recycling, staff provided a report that will increase recycling locations in the park and establish a small battery drop off at Town Hall.
4.Winter control contracts (snow plowing) expired this spring. Council gave direction to staff to explore the feasibility of providing those services in-house, including levels of service. Report is expected at the June Committee of the Whole meeting.
After Committee of the Whole, a Special Council meeting was held to discuss a single issue – negotiations with LeBoat, regarding mooring compensation to the Village of Westport for 2019. An agreement in principle was reached on May 16. The agreement provides the Village with $10K compensation to cover mooring fees from LeBoat. This agreement applies to the first 2 LeBoats nightly. Additional LeBoats pay the standard fee. Council passed a resolution in favour of the agreement.

Well done Bundy, Scott, Troy and everyone else involved in supporting the Ontario Amateur Softball Association offering its pre-season Springboard Program Lockwood Field, Westport today. The clinics offered fun skills and drills to players in two age groups: 8 to 12 and 13 to 16. The younger group had approx 28 players this morning and there looked to be around 60 involved this afternoon. Players were doing drills to learn and practice the basic fundamentals of the game of fastball: Catching and Fielding, Throwing, Hitting. There is also a pitching session taught by Softball Ontario’s CANpitch instructors. Yes, right here in your Village. What a great event!
On Friday, May 17, the Honourable Monte McNaughton, Minister of Infrastructure for the province, announced a $71 million financial commitment by the Provincial Government to improve cell coverage in Eastern Ontario. The Eastern Ontario Wardens Caucus has made this its highest priority for the past two years. Special thank you to our own MPP Steve Clark, whose support for this project has remained strong.
