If you can spare a couple of hours on Saturday afternoon to lay sod in Lockwood park, please join us at Fetch Murphy Way and Main St at 4:00 p.m.

The Green Street Challenge is occurring on Saturday, June 30 at Fetch Murphy Way.  The sod will be laid on the road in the morning and children of all ages are invited to come and play throughout the day.  The Fire Fighters will be hosting a BBQ at the spring as well.

At the end of the event, Green Street Challenge donates the sod to the host.  This means we can finish some of the projects at Lockwood park and lay sod around the stage and basketball court, including the berm beside the natural playground.

It is going to be a hot day and we are asking for volunteers to make the work go quicker.  There will be some fire fighters rolling up the sod beginning at 4:00 p.m.  If you can spare a couple of hours to help, all of the sod can be rolled up and then laid at the park.

Paul Snider, CAO/Clerk will be on site at Fetch Murphy Way at 4:00.  Please sign in with him if you can help us out.

Thank you.

July 1st in the Village of Westport; Happy Birthday Canada

Cenotaph - Canadian flag

The Canada Day celebrations in the Village will begin at 1:30 on July 1st at the George St side of Lockwood Park.  Events include the grand opening of the stage and announcing the Westport Senior of the Year.  MPP Steve Clark will be here to help us cut the ribbon.

The parade will then begin and we are inviting everyone to be IN the parade again this year.  There is a space for you if you fall into any of these categories: boys and girls, girls and boys and kids with their bikes.  Other categories include dogs and their owners, musicians, clowns, men and women, grandmas, grandpas, aunties, uncles and cousins, antique vehicles and floats.   The Westport Senior of the Year will lead the parade – right behind the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 542 Colour Party. The Fire Fighters will be joining the fun again this year. Join the fun on July 1st and show your home town pride by wearing red and white!.

The parade begins on George St and proceeds to Bedford St, to Church St, down Church to Spring St and end at the Community Centre where Sparky will be waiting for the kids and the Legion will have treats.

And at 5:00 p.m., everyone can join the rest of the July 1st events at Rideau Vista Public School, where there will be a BBQ, games for the kids, live music and, of course, the best fireworks in Eastern Ontario.

Happy Canada Day!

Sounds of spring this week in Westport? Construction!!!!

Another week of hammering, sawing and heavy machinery chugging in the ‘Port.  It sounds amazing, doesn’t it?  Home owners are fixing roofs, adding additions, and finishing projects.  Fetch Murphy Way was paved so no more wash outs in the next heavy rain. The foundation of the new basketball court was constructed and is waiting for the concrete.  The framing of the covered stage is also underway in the park.  (Remember – neither the basketball court nor covered stage is funded through tax dollars, rather by fund raising and grants.)

What an exhilarating feeling in the Village!

Official opening of the stage will take place on July 1.  More details to follow.

stage June 15-18

And so the building of the stage begins….

I previously advised that the Village had been successful in its grant application to the Ontario Trillium Fund that will cover 100% of the costs to build a covered stage in Lockwood Park.  Scott Blair Construction began the work yesterday.  Watch its progress over the next few weeks on the George St side of the park.  It is our intention (that would be both Scott’s and the Village’s:-) to hold the Grand Opening on July 1st!  Stay tuned.
