Planned construction by UCLG on Main St (Mill Pond spillway) bridge

After the United Counties of Leeds & Grenville (UCLG) public works did some testing this past summer/fall on the Main St Bridge, I met with a group of community members who raised their concerns about the bridge.  I followed that up with a discussion with the UCLG Director of Public Works and shared with him their concerns and in particular that the Village and the public want some input, through consultation, should the rehabilitation proceed.

Clearly, one of the concerns is the public safety issue for pedestrians in the absence of a sidewalk.  I was surprised to read in this week’s paper that the UCLG Manager of Public Works indicated that a decision has already been reached about the rehab and that it does not include a sidewalk.

The  first of the budget meetings to debate and approve the 2018 UCLG capital budget is scheduled for February 8.  It is during this meeting, and any subsequent budget meetings, that UCLG Council considers staff submissions and either approves them or asks for additional information.  Be assured that no decision on the Westport Main St bridge has been made by UCLG Council.

I have asked Mr Paul Snider, CAO/Clerk for the Village of Westport, to add this item to the agenda for the February 5 Westport Council meeting.  This will allow the issue of the sidewalk on the Main St bridge to be discussed by Westport Council and that I am in the position to present to UCLG Council on February 8 any resolution passed by Westport Council. Westport’s Council meeting begins at 7:00 p.m. on February 5.

I have heard from many frustrated community members since the paper was published this week and hope this update provides information in regard to the proposed rehab of the Main St bridge.  Please call if you have concerns.  9195

Almost HOME!

I have been away from Westport for the past two weeks – business and vacation.  I am three hours away from home and can’t wait to get there!  So much happening in the Village in the next couple of weeks … and am really looking forward to the Robbie Burns dinner Thursday.

Call if you need anything.  9195

Update on the new Waste Water Treatment system – Jan 5, 2018

The contractor continues to finish construction on the new waste water system.  However, the lagoons are close to capacity and until the plant is fully operational, it will be necessary to haul effluent again this year to Smiths Falls.  The Village has tendered the haulage and you will begin to see trucks later next week.

The haulage will ensure that lagoon levels stay ahead of the daily flows, which is different than past years where the intention of haulage was to empty the lagoons.  I know we all hope that the system is fully operational in the next few weeks.

So, when you see the tankers on County Rd 10 or 42 next week, it is important for you to know that our contract states that the cost of haulage is the contractor’s, not ours.

Please call if you have any questions.  9195

Westport in Bloom has Christmas gift suggestions….

From

Janette Auer
and the Westport in Bloom Tree Sale Committee
Last year for the first time we opened our tree sale before Christmas as an experiment and were overwhelmed by the immediate response of our customers. It might have been the suggestion that “the Christmas gift of a promise of a tree in spring” was embraced so enthusiastically, or perhaps it was just that we have such a collection of tree lovers among us that people couldn’t wait to get their orders in!
Whatever the reason for our phenomenal success in 2017, our greatest tree sale ever, we have decided to open up the sale early again – today, to be precise. And this year is very exciting for us because for the first time we are dealing directly with our supplier instead of as a sub-group of another tree sale. We now have much greater control over what we order and direct access to the supplier. More work for us, but even greater excitement than before about the whole process. We are offering 25 absolutely gorgeous tree varieties, some repeats from earlier sales, some we’ve never offered before.
Westport in Bloom is a small volunteer group dedicated to keeping the village beautiful with flowers in summer and decorations during the Christmas season. Everything we do costs money and every penny raised by the tree sale, our main fundraiser, goes to doing just this. We also like to think of the tree sale as a public service. We are providing beautiful, very high-quality trees to our customers at excellent prices, much lower than garden centre prices, allowing people to enhance both the value and the enjoyment of their properties.
Take a look at our catalogue here on the Westport in Bloom website: https://westportinbloom.com/trees-3/  or click on the document attached below, which you can save and browse on your computer,
and contact me at janette.elaine.auer@gmail.com (or just reply to this email) or 613-273-8760 for more information or to place an order.
And watch for regular tree sale updates by Betty Jo MacDougall on Facebook sites such as Westport Ontario and the various Buy, Trade and Sell sites for nearby towns and regions.
Please keep in mind that many of our trees sell out early, particularly the fruit trees, so if you’re interested in any of our offerings, don’t hesitate with that order! Trees will be delivered in late April, and pickup day is usually Saturday of the last weekend.
If you wish to order a tree as a gift for someone else, we can make available a Westport in Bloom gift card (not a gift certificate) for you to send to the recipient of the gift tree.
with all best wishes, and hoping to hear from you soon,
